The Pitch Bite Club: Renee Kelly’s Harvest!!

biteclub

Last month, Xavier and I attended the second event of The Pitch’s Bite Club, hosted by The Pitch, FindItKC, and Renee Kelly’s Harvest. For a reminder of what the bite club is and of the first event, go here.

The venue this time was Renee Kelly’s Harvest in Shawnee Mission, KS. Harvest is housed in the old Caenan Castle. Yes, a castle, but think a smaller scale.

As with the first event, Chris Olsen of FindItKC, that’s him up there with Xavier, was an awesome host. Dinner was presented by the very energetic chef Renee Kelly.

I started off with a drink from the cocktail menu, the chocolate pumpkin martini, which was perfect. The chocolate pumpkin combo was new to me and very glad that I tried it, even though I drank it way too fast. Xavier had the Lemon Blossom, think Black-Eyed Susan. We had a bartender on hand to explain each cocktail and make great recommendations.

We were served a four course meal. The first was pressed duck chest that was very fresh and tender, black rice(which I’d never had before), apple slaw with huckleberry and beet sauce. The sauce was magic, and I am not a duck person, but this one was a winner.

The second course was the tastiest carrot and ginger bisque with crystallized ginger, creme fraiche and bourbon pear balsamic vinaigrette ever, though I can’t say I’ve ever had it before.

For the main course, we had the scotch filet with butter braised turnips, pink potatoes, and parsnips and apple puree. The puree was like whoa. I ate everythang. It was cooked perfectly for me and as farm fresh as they come.

For dessert, we had chocolate ganache cake with candied orange peel. Xavier doesn’t even like chocolate cake, but he ate all of his and so did I 🙂

Besides the food, chef Renee was one of the highlights of the dinner. Her energy and enthusiasm was very contagious. She had everyone excited about each course. She is very passionate about her craft and it shows in each of the dish that she presented. She also gave us a little insight into what she has in store for the future and it is definitely a bright one.

If you need a new place to grab drinks and awesome farm to table food, definitely stop by Renee Kelly’s Harvest. I know we will definitely be back! 🙂

Monkey Bread!!

I am all for quick and easy recipes. The less ingredients and the less the preparation, the better. Especially when it comes to pastry, because I can’t pastry, I just can’t. The dough never comes out right. So, when I saw this video above, I had to try it. Also, because there were 4 cans of mini biscuit dough that no one wants to eat. Plus, it’s like 3 ingredients.

I had never heard of monkey bread before, but it looks good, so we tried one of the sweet recipes. The girls and I baked the cinnamon and sugar version. It came out really well and even looked like the finished product in the video! And it is yummy! I prepped the ingredients and the girls did the dirty work of coating the dough. There was sugar and cinnamon everywhere, but it’s all good. Here is what ours looked liked:

Week 35: Finally, Friday!!

20140511-110145.jpg

Hope everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend! Here is a late Friday post.

Highlights:

Last weekend, we went to the Brookside Art Annual and also checked out a couple of places we have been meaning to visit, Foo’s Frozen Custard and the Reading Reptile. The girls loved the Reading Reptile, it’s now the coolest bookstore ever, said Xavi. More on this place later. And then we decided to have a random Cinco de Mayo BBQ at the park with friends.

*Apparently there is not a flavor that they do not have at Foo’s.*

The big girls are gearing up for end of school year activities such as finals testing and field day. This year went by so fast, I can’t believe that the school year is over in two weeks. Xavi finally finished make-up testing and she is too relieved.

I went to the girls’ Book Fair with them at school because some kids were stealing books, so parental supervision was required. Kids stealing book. Really. They were having a buy one, get one free sale and apparently it was a must.

Xavi has picked up her reading time quite a bit, maybe she is prepping for when she get her eye glasses. She tells me that she likes fantasy and magic books a lot. She was too excited when we picked out her eyeglasses this week and she couldn’t understand why she had to wait 2 weeks to take them home.

Aspen:

Aspen has a new phrase that is gonna get her in trouble more often than not: “I was talking to Daddy not you Mommy”….Excuse me?

She uses this phrase a lot when she wants something and I or someone else tells her no.

Also, she told me that she is going to be Aspen the First like Sophia the First. So she said that she will need a pink crown with a pink dress with pink stripes. Eww and Gross, says me. Pink. I told her, her dad will make it happen.

Her birthday is slowly creeping up, so I have started asking her what she wants for her birthday party and these seem to be the constant requests: A pink Bubble Guppies pinata and pink balloons and pink cake and Lightning McQueen and Frozen and Woody plates….? And a plate for Bambi(her current favorite stuffed animal deer)

I will have to narrow it down later.
